Video sports analysis for the gulf cup of nations

The challenge:

The Gulf Cup of Nations or Arabian Gulf Cup is an association football tournament currently held every two years in the Middle East.

During the last Cup, the Saudi TV wanted to create a bi-weekly sport analysis TV pundit show. The aim behind this was to grow the football fun base locally and regionally.

The approach:

To use RT Software’s real live graphics application to prepare sports analysis clips so they could be used in conjunction with a broadcast quality touch-screen applications. Both the touch-screen and the graphics application were created specifically for the TV show.

Each clip was prepared in advance of pre-game shows, and during the ‘live’ games for use at half time and full time shows. During the ‘live’ shows the presenter could play out various football clips and add further analysis such as lines and arrows.

The solution:

An augmented reality solution – used for the first time in a Middle East sports programme.  It showed 3D players running around the video presentation table whilst under the control of the presenter. Capable of being pre-set with the likely formations of the teams, the presenter used this to explain tactics and options to the audience.

The result:

“There was a tremendous buzz of activity at the start of the tournament to get graphics finished, team databases built and kit in place” comments Mike Fredriksen, RT Software Commercial Director. “We even managed to add a few extra nice touches like the incorporation of a model of the King’s stadium onto the touch table”.
